2 giorni a Liverpool – itinerario nella città dei Beatles

Liverpool, secondo me, è la “sorella minore” di Manchester: entrambe sono figlie della Rivoluzione Industriale, entrambe hanno utilizzato i corsi d’acqua per prosperare, entrambe hanno squadre di calcio dal blasone internazionale, entrambe hanno dato i natali a band famosissime, e sono distanziate solo da qualche decina di chilometri (ehm, miglia).

In particolare, Liverpool è la città d’origine dei leggendari Fab Four, i Beatles, nati in un periodo molto florido per la scena musicale della città inglese (quello del cosìdetto Mersey beat).

E, proprio ai Beatles, è dedicato un bellissimo museo posto all’Albert Dock, nell’area portuale, il Beatles Story. Non solo, a pochi passi si trovano gli interessantissimi musei (tutti gratuiti) della schiavitù (International Slavery Museum), del mare (Merseyside Maritime Museum in cui si trova anche memorabilia del Titanic), la Tate (sezione di Liverpool) Gallery, il nuovissimo Museum of Liverpool.

Inoltre, ho seguito un percorso che mi ha portato a visitare tutte le case dei Beatles (che poi elencherò nell’itinerario).

In ultimo, non possiamo dimenticare Matthew Street, in cui si trova(va) il Cavern Club, locale in cui i Beatles hanno suonato un infinità di volte, durante gli esordi. Attenzione alle fiumane di jappo con fotocamera al collo! 🙂

Sempre rimanendo nella zona dell’Albert Dock, è possibile prendere il battello (Mersey Ferry) che porta dall’altra parte del fiume Mersey, a Birkenhead, per avere una bella visuale della città. Un messaggio registrato vi illustrerà i principali punti di interesse, e darà alcuni dettagli storici.

Liverpool presenta un’architettura molto simile a quella della vicina (rivale) Manchester, e l’eredità della Rivoluzione Industriale è piuttosto evidente nei suoi edifici di mattoni a vista.

Ovviamente, per gli appassionati di calcio, è possibile visitare il leggendario Anfield Road, lo stadio del Liverpool, con tanto di giro intorno al campo e sosta ai piedi della curva Kop!

Come per i ticket per l’Old Trafford, anche per Anfield Road vi consiglio di acquistare il biglietto per il tour con molto anticipo (link al sito ufficiale).

La mia visita allo stadio del Liverpool: il leggendario Anfield Road

La città è piccolina, ci si muove prevalentemente a piedi, coi bus, e con una ferrovia suburbana (Merseyrail), che però ha frequenze da far cadere le braccia, e personalmente la sconsiglio.

Se decidete di comprare l’abbonamento giornaliero ai mezzi pubblici, fate attenzione al suo funzionamento: dovete rimuovere la pellicola trasparente, grattare il giorno ed il mese in cui volete utilizzarlo con una monetina, e riapplicare la pellicola trasparente.

Io sono arrivato la mattina presto da Manchester, in cui ho trascorso 2 giorni (guida), ed anche qui ho trascorso due giorni pieni, che permettono di vedere tutte le cose più interessanti di Liverpool (tempo permettendo che, da quelle parti, anche in estate, è pessimo!).

Andiamo subito all’itinerario che ho seguito in questi due giorni (ovviamente, l’orario della visita ad Anfield Road può variare, nel mio caso era alle 3PM):

• St. Luke’s Church (chiesa dell’800 devastata dal blitz nazista)
• Bold St (strada di locali e shopping)
• Clayton Square (shopping district)
• Beatles Tour – Cavern Club

One of the most iconic Liverpool locations for The Beatles is The Cavern Club, where they played regularly in their early days. The club has changed hands many times, but is very popular today as a joint tourist attraction and live music venue. Mathew Street is pedestrianised, but we can see the Cavern sign from the nearby road, and just catch a glimpse of the statue of John leaning against the wall outside the club.

• Saint George’s Hall (concert hall neoclassica di metà ‘800)
• Beatles Tour – Liverpool Empire Theatre (ultimo posto in cui hanno suonato)
• Cattedrale di Liverpool (più grande cattedrale anglicana del Regno Unito)
• 3:00PM Anfield Road Tour (dalla Cattedrale ci vogliono 42 minuti, prendi il bus 27 (L’pool – Kensington – L’pool) delle 2:09PM da Toxteth, St James Place, Parliament Street, Stop A fino ad Anfield, Walton Breck Road, Venice Street
• Beatles Tour – 10 Admiral St – Casa di Ringo Starr (dallo Stadio, prendi il bus 26 (L’pool – Fairfield – L’pool) fino a Toxteth, Princes Road , High Park Street, Stop A

Ringo Starr lived with his mother at 10 Admiral Grove, which the Street View car couldn’t quite get to. The pub at the end of the street was pictured on the cover of his first solo album.

• Lark Lane (zona studentesca bohemian, pub, cafè)
• Sefton Park
• Beatles Tour – 20 Forthlin Rd – Casa di Mc Cartney (esci dal lato sud est di Sefton Park, e prendi il treno City Line da Mossley Hill a West Allerton

The small house was an early gathering place for the Beatles and many songs were written here. Because of this historic significance, the National Trust purchased the property in 1995.

• Beatles Tour – 251 Menlove Ave – Casa di John Lennon

John lived a short distance from St Peter’s Church, at 251 Menlove Avenue – the semi-detached house and leafy boulevard quite a contrast to the much more modest homes his bandmates lived in. The National Trust was reluctant to purchase the house as it didn’t have a direct connection to the band. Yoko Ono purchased it in 2003 and donated it to the Trust.

• Beatles Tour – Strawberry Field

Less than a kilometre to the east is the other half of The Beatle’s famous 1967 single. Strawberry Field (pluralised by John for the song’s title) was a Salvation Army children’s home with sprawling wooded grounds where John often played as a child. The brick walls have been heavily graffitied by visitors over the years. The red iron gates have recently been replaced by replicas.

Numerous locations around Liverpool were mentioned in Beatles songs, with one of the most famous being Penny Lane.

• Beatles Tour – Penny Lane’s ‘shelter in the middle of a roundabout‘.

While Paul wrote the song, it was John’s neighbourhood, being close to both the Menlove Avenue house, as well as an earlier home. His first wife Cynthia worked in a shop nearby. Penny Lane’s ‘shelter in the middle of a roundabout‘ was a busy bus terminus serving the numerous buses which ran along the major roads which meet here. Redeveloped into a cafe (latterly named Sergeant Pepper’s!) it now sits derelict despite the number of tourists who visit the area.

• Beatles Tour – 12 Arnold Grove – Casa di George Harrison (dopo di questo, il bus 79D torna a Lime St.)

George Harrison’s family home was a small terraced house at 12 Arnold Grove. While it has been declared a heritage site, the current owner has resisted having a sign placed on the building, maybe feeling that they already get plenty of visitors to their private home.
