Budapest (Christmas) – What to see in 3 and a half days

Budapest, view from the hill

Put a promotion last minute of WizzAir, put the reputation of Christmas markets of Budapest, has gotten the chance to do a “long weekend” in Hungary's capital.

After visiting Krakow and Prague, in fact, for a while’ I wanted to visit the other pearl of Central Europe, or Budapest.

The fact that Hungary has not passed yet (a fine 2014) but adopt the Euro Forint (GBP), gives us a good margin on the exchange rate, even though the cost of living is definitely superior both in Krakow, that in Prague (but I visited over 10 years ago, and do not know what changes there have been).

Some remnant of’communist era emerges here and there (see old Trabant semi-rusted, caravans produced in the GDR, tower blocks of type “commie block” in suburbs) but, to be honest, I expected worse: The city center is polished, obrobri the concrete are few, churches are restored. In short, the foundations for a very nice visit we are all!

An old Trabant on the road Andrássy út

The city, like all those in the East of “Iron Curtain”, has an excellent public transport system, based mainly on tram and metro. The cost is relatively low (350HUF for a single ticket, 530HUF for a ticket that provides interchange), in relation to the service offered.

Be careful to validate your ticket before boarding any means: controllers are lurking in the main stations / stops, and “trained” to target unwary tourists!

You can buy tickets at the airport (T2), AL “customer service point”. For convenience, I bought it at once all the tickets I needed for my visit, paying by credit card.

Airport, Unfortunately, is not connected to the subway: you have to take a bus, the 200E, that each 7 minutes connects the T2 at the terminus of Line 3 Subway (Kôbánya- Kispest). In totale, calculated 50 minutes for the journey from the city center-airport.

There comes to mind to withdraw local currency in aerporto: in fact, there are only private ATM, applying fees from loan sharking! Look, easy, a real bank in the city center, to withdraw Fiorini without change currency “pirate shi”.

English is spoken by most of the young people and those who work in tourism, and personally I did not find any particular communication difficulties. The German seems to have a, albeit limited, spread.

The food is typical of central: soups, pork, preserve, honey, my. some, There are some specialties that you can not NOT try, during your stay in Budapest:

  • Chimney (A cake made of puff pastry sweetened, flavored most times cinnamon, grilling on a skewer, placed on a grill)
  • The Gulag (Anyone who has visited the former Czechoslovakia, Poland or Hungary, knows that this dish spicy meat is the basis of local cuisine)
  • Cakes Café Gerbeaud (Pastry Vörösmarty tér was a favorite of the Empress Sissi, and her cakes, albeit expensive, are simply delicious)

One of the cakes Café Gerbeaud

It, come me, visit Budapest at Christmas, Make sure to try and buy many varieties of honey and jams at a very reasonable!

About Christmas, I leave you a video I shot in the most important Christmas market in Budapest, Vörösmarty Square:

In definitiva, was a very good visit: I could talk dell'istruttiva visit to “House of Terror“, impressiveness of Chain Bridge, the beautiful Matthias Church, of guided tour of the Parliament, but… I prefer not to spoil the surprise, and I limit myself to list, point by point and format Google Maps, whole’route that I followed in these 3 and a half days, with restart the next morning.

To book a visit Parliament and purchase other tickets, and skip the queues, I preferred to buy online.

If you want to take a look at photo I took in Budapest, you can access the album in my gallery, A this address.
