Lubecca: what to see in one visit 2 days

View of the Rathaus and the Markplatz Lübeck

I had often spoken of Lubecca, the Lubeck, as it is called in German.

His Hall (Town hall, the building with the spiers that you can see in the right corner of the square) is famous, famous enough to be included in the list of goods protected by UNESCO.

His marzipan, in particular that produced by 200 years from the pastry Cafe Niederegger, it is equally! If you have not been lucky enough to try it in the headquarters of Lübeck, you can find it in almost any duty free of any German airport.

Also, beyond the many beautiful churches of the old town, courtyards (Gang), of Holstentor (one of the gates of the city, UNESCO heritage), attracted me so much the idea of being able to visit the house of Willy Brandt, in my opinion the main chancellor of West Germany, which sowed the seeds of the European Union, and worked to try to “clean up” the face of Germany in the eyes of the world.
Remember the famous speech in which Kennedy said: “I am a Berliner!“. Here, Brandt was the next, as Chancellor of Germany.

the Willy-Brandt-Haus Lubeck is free admission, the visit is possible in both English and in German, if you are fans like myself in history and politics, end up spend at least 3 hours!

Gothic Lunecca

Lübeck is one of the main representatives of the style “Gothic Baltic”, made of red bricks and decorated gables

Another very interesting visit, and of which there seems no trace in the Italian guides, was that the Documentation Centre the border of the GDR (Border documentation center of Lübeck-Schlutup), built in an old border crossing between West Germany and East Germany, that passed right through the outskirts of Lübeck.

Inside you will find everything, but it all has to do with the lives of the border guards of the GDR: uniforms, all radio, to food (who remembers gherkins of fim “Good Bye, Lenin!” ?).

Unfortunately, the visit is only in German, the same old lady at the checkout does not speak English, so you'll give you a hint on the belly, or… bring a good vocabulary! 🙂

Unfortunately, since the beginning of March and still doing very cold, I avoided going to Travemunde, the nearby town-resort, frequentatissima in estate ma, sincerely, I doubt it was a great loss.

Getting to Lubeck it is rather easy: I came from Lüneburg, other beautiful Hanseatic city of which I have already spoken, and I took a regional train DB direct.

Same thing you can do if you come from Hamburg, with a variable cost between 15 was 20 euro, and an hour travel.

In alternative, you could land at Lübeck airport, but Ryanair, historically the main carrier of the small airport, has recently removed the curtains (literally), and then Hamburg Airport is the nearest airport.

I combined the visit to Lübeck with a round of two other nearby Hanseatic cities (Wismar and Schwerin), but I will speak in another post.

I leave you a video that I shot in a deserted Marktplatz, the main square overlooked by the Town Hall (Town hall), and the Church of S. Maria, while the church bells chime the hours.

below, I would like to point out the only steps that I followed in my visit to Lübeck, Coming from Luneburg.
