1 day in Oxford: driving to campus (e di Harry Potter)
Say Oxford, and think exterminated campus universitari, frequented by people that (at least until a few years ago) They had a number of names and titles of honor longer than the end credits of a movie, Think of rowers who are preparing to defy Cambridge, Think of Harry Potter (Remember the refectory? nursing? And the staircases where kids are welcomed to Hogwarts? All of which are located in Oxford).
and, all this, it is only just over 1 and now… 1 sterling from London!
Even I was surprised but I'm, thanks to the usual site Megabus (that you be blessed for your cut-rate in North America), you can buy, with due advance, tickets for buses and trains in Britain.
The trick is to purchase with 6/7 weeks in advance, and comb through the dates lurk bids to £ 1.
Trafficking Oxford-London-Oxford is operated by “Oxford Tube“, a service that provides dozens of daily trips by bus between the two cities (hence the name “Tube”), and the departure is in front of Victoria Station.
Simply print the receipt of Megabus, containing the reservation code, and show all'autista.
Oxford Tube comes down to the center of Oxford, a Gloucester Green, not far from City Hall, then we will be in the university area.
In the city we are moving on foot or by bike, most college can be visited at certain times, and the entrance fee (usually, from £ 5 to rise).
Certainly, I recommend you visit the largest college in Oxford: Christchurch, and the relative Church, founded in 1524, in which they studied some of the most illustrious British (Prime Ministers, poets), including Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland.
Unfortunately, until June 2015, the student refectory, used as a model for refectory of Hogwarts, It will be (he was, ed) closed. While this results in a slight reduction in the cost of entry, other, It is a big disappointment!
At the end of the post I will show you the map (in formato Google Maps) e l’itinerary in text form, but I followed, in general, you can wander in the courtyards and streets of the college (unless signs specifically forbidding entering), no risk of getting lost!
I found it extremely interesting Museum of the History of Science (Free, but with donation request, I got it, Italian?).
It ranges from sundials to Roman times, amulets of the '600 found in and around Naples to fight the evil eye (!!), tools to navigate at sea, the cameras, all’anatomia, alle prime radio built by Marconi, up to a blackboard that a witness Albert Einstein lecture at Oxford!
Also, it's really nice to spend time with the custodians of the small museum, who advise you not to miss all the goodies. They seem to really have a passion for what they do, especially when comparing them with some custodians of some state museums of my knowledge, who do nothing but snore chair, and speak loudly and in the dialect of the football betting to place.
